Sybella’s 104MWh BESS Moves into EPC: What Remote Industrial Buyers Should Learn

Verified fact: UGL was awarded the engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning contract for APA Group’s Sybella project near Mount Isa, Queensland. The project combines a 72MW solar farm with a 52MW/104MWh battery energy storage system.

What happened

The EPC award moves the project from owner-level commitment into execution, interface management and equipment scheduling. APA’s investment decision identified the project as part of a long-term energy supply arrangement for Evolution Mining’s Ernest Henry operation. The nominal two-hour battery configuration can support solar shifting, variability management and remote industrial load operation, but public announcements have not disclosed guaranteed usable energy, degradation assumptions, the cycle profile or the selected battery platform.

Why this matters for buyers

Zevonexa’s assessment: the project is a useful procurement benchmark because storage is being treated as part of an integrated remote-energy system. Industrial buyers should evaluate solar production, critical loads, generator or grid behaviour, reserve requirements and outage consequences—not battery nameplate capacity alone.

EPC scope must coordinate the BESS, PCS, medium-voltage equipment, protection, plant controller, EMS and the site’s existing power system. Interface gaps can create schedule and commissioning risk even when individual components pass factory tests.

Parameters to define in the RFQ

  • Required MW, usable MWh, operating reserve and auxiliary consumption.
  • Warranted throughput, annual cycles, availability and end-of-life capacity.
  • Solar, BESS, grid and generator dispatch hierarchy.
  • Ambient temperature, dust, corrosion and transport constraints.
  • Protection, harmonics, SCADA and commissioning acceptance tests.
  • Safety monitoring, shutdown and emergency-response documentation.

Bottom line: industrial storage procurement is an integration exercise. A bankable RFQ should define the load, power sources, control philosophy, environmental limits and performance guarantees before suppliers optimise the battery configuration.

Policy & Market Signal

BRICS 2026 Expands Cooperation on Solar, Smart Grids and Energy Storage

The New Delhi Declaration welcomed cooperation on smart grids, energy storage and a solar photovoltaic roadmap. This is a policy signal rather than an immediate tender announcement. Project viability still depends on local grid codes, tariffs, financing and site operating requirements.
