BESS Sizing Guide

1MW / 2MWh BESS Sizing Example

Quick answer: A 1MW / 2MWh BESS is a nominal 2-hour battery system. The 1MW figure is power; 2MWh is energy. It is a useful starting architecture for industrial, renewable integration and microgrid projects, but the final design must be based on the load profile and operating objective.

How is a 1MW / 2MWh BESS calculated?

At the simplest level, duration = energy ÷ power. 2MWh ÷ 1MW = 2 hours nominal. This ratio does not by itself prove that the system can continuously serve a 1MW site load for two hours under every operating condition.

What changes the required battery capacity?

Critical versus non-critical load, usable SOC window, conversion losses, auxiliaries, end-of-life capacity target, ambient temperature, cycling strategy and redundancy can all change the nameplate capacity required.

Where is 1MW / 2MWh commonly considered?

Typical screening use cases include industrial peak management, solar energy shifting, hybrid microgrids, diesel-generator support and backup of selected critical loads.

What should be included in an RFQ?

Send the load profile, maximum demand, critical load, required duration, grid conditions, PV and generator capacities, voltage, site environment, duty cycle and required delivery schedule. Then use our calculator or review the 1MWh BESS platform.
